Samsung Galaxy S3 to sport dual operating systems

Rumours for Samsung’s as-yet unannounced Galaxy S3 has reached fever pitch, as yet another “leaked photo” emerges, along with details that suggests the phone could rock dual operating systems.

Spotted on social news site Reddit, a fashionably low-res snap of a handset has been claimed to be Sammy upcoming hero Android smartie has cropped up, accompanied by specs that reportedly originated from a Samsung employee.



The post states the handset “will possibly have two optional launchers, ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) with TouchWiz overlay and vanilla ICS".

If true, this would mean owners of the S3 could benefit from the best of both worlds – an untouched version of Android that can be updated almost as quickly as any Google branded phones – and a bespoke edition with all of Samsung’s wonderful customisations slathered on top.

The anonymous tipster goes on to claim that the South Korean giant is not “100 per cent sure if they will stick with TouchWiz or have the dual launcher option” and that the above solution will give users the “option of picking which one to use at start-up” and be able to “change anytime”.

Frankly, we just don’t see TouchWiz going away anytime soon, considering the success it’s brought Samsung so far, and the fact remains that custom interfaces help Android manufacturers differentiate each other’s products.

But we definitely like the idea of having a vanilla version of Android to play with. It might all be a pipe dream, but a dual booting option definitely sounds like a viable solution to the frustration users have to face to get on board the latest OS refresh.

In addition to dual operating systems, the S3 is also rumoured to boast "a ceramic 'micro arc oxidation' back", a “quad core Exynos 4412 processor”, 2GB of RAM, a 12-megapixel and a sizable 2250mAh battery – all dressed in a body even thinner than its predecessor.

Samsung is due to hold a press event in the coming weeks where it is expected to officially unveil the Galaxy S3 or whatever it winds up being called.
